ESL-English Class interviews Students in the Art Class who worked on International Epicure project.

International Epicure

The "International Epicure" is a project in which students from the foreign language classes are using their
translating skills to created menus for a restaurant. In fact, there are actually many different classes
involved in this project. For instance, the art class is including artwork from Spanish and French
countries. In addition, we decided to gather some background information about each student and what
the student or their class is doing to contribute to this project.

I interviewed the students from the Intermediate Painting class instructed by Deborah Davidson, and their
major is art. Their class is responsible for providing thematic paintings that will be reproduced as murals
for inclusion in the restaurants. For example, one of the students is going to add a painting which he titled
"Digital Kiwi" to this project. It is an abstract oil painting approximately 30"X 48" and composed of kiwi
slices, a computer circuit board all wrapped up in kiwi skin.

Not only they are able to practice their painting skills, but also an understanding of the business aspect of
the project and how they, as artists, must learn to bid, negotiate, and schedule the production of the
mural. Also, this project will prepare the students for jobs in the future. They hoped to learn how to work
within a large group than they were used to and solve a large solution with many different levels of input.
Also, They suggested that if, as artists, they intend to sell their skills or artwork in the marketplace, then
this project has provided a small introduction to that process. In addition, this project is providing them
the opportunity to interact, cooperate, and partner with students from other disciplines which, not so
coincidentally, is exactly how Corporate America operates.

These working students suggested that the experience was great and enjoyable. In addition, they
suggested that this is a "working" introduction to some of the skills and expectations that people will
encounter in the workplace. For example, some of the students suggested that working for small
independent firms and large international corporations, regardless of the company’s size or product, they
will need to have experience in inter-office and inter-department cooperation and partnering. This
cooperation will be essential to realize the company's goals and initiatives.
