Contact Name and Number:

Marcia Hendricks Tungate

(714) 566-3070

Services Offered:

As the official adult literacy program of the Orange County Public Library, we provide free basic literacy skills tutoring to adults over 16 or out of the traditional high school setting in any of the cities in which there is an Orange County Public Library.  We train volunteer tutors to work one-to-one and in small groups in a variety of ways to provide the highest quality tutoring possible to our students.  We provide on-going skills enhancement classes for our volunteers and specialized small group classes for students desiring more than the one-to-one tutoring.  We provide diagnostic assessment to potential students at a library near them in a confidential setting.  In addition to the general population, we have partnerships to provide tutoring in the jails, Horizon Schools, teen parent programs, and a number of other community service groups.

Short-term Volunteer Opportunities:

We have on-going need for office administration assistance, data input, grant research and writing, public speaking, newsletter assistance, and many other projects.  The foundation of our program is the volunteer, so we are always willing to be accommodating with scheduling.

Long-term Volunteer Opportunities:

In the past, we have trained interns as workshop assistants in preparation for becoming a training tutor, assessors, public speakers, student support staff, small group tutors and many other positions in READ.  We believe that the internship should be of mutual benefit to both our program and the intern.  All interns must be interviewed by the Literacy Coordinator before working in the program.

Opportunities to Observe at Organization:

Students may make an appointment to visit READ to observe our services with the exception of the actual tutoring sessions.  We promise our students strict confidentiality and, consequently, no tutoring session may be observed without the student’s written permission.  All other functions of our organization are open for observation.
