Craft is not to be confused with art. Knowledge and
skill, however broad and however facile, do not by themselves produce depth in
the painter or quality in his painting. A craftsman takes pride in the skill of
his hands, but an artist takes pride in the truth of his mind and heart.
GOALS AND DESCRIPTION:
1.
To give students a working knowledge of the basic theories and techniques
of oil painting.
2.
To familiarize students with traditional and contemporary use of
vocabulary, equipment and traditions of oil painting as related to visual
experiences and concepts.

ASSIGNMENTS
1.
Value study using basic shapes. Canvas size is 16” x 20 ”. Student will learn how to mix and apply black, white and gray to create
volume, form and composition.
2.
Color exercise.
3.
Color study using warm and cool primaries to dull; analogous colors to
lighten and darken. Canvas 16”
x 20”.
4.
Mural Service learning project at WTLC 12 hours will be arranged during
the semester to work on a group project at an off campus site. Students will
learn how to work on a large project in a group situation.
5.
Copy of a master’s painting. Attempting to copy not only technique but
style. Canvas 16”
x 20” or larger. Consider size of the piece you are
copying.
6.
Paper: topic to be given in class.
